Window film insulation does work to provide more consistent and comfortable interior temperatures. We recommend a specific type of film for this application called year-round film or 3M Thinsulate.
3M Thinsulate is a relatively clear film that adheres to the inside of your windows, acting as a layer of insulation. The film works year-round to retain the heated or cooled air generated by your HVAC system. In the winter, it traps warmth inside your space rather than allowing it to escape through the glass. In the summer, the film retains the cool air created by your air conditioning unit while simultaneously rejecting up to 67% of the sun’s heat. This improved temperature control results in better occupant comfort.
Improved Energy Efficiency
In addition to improving the comfort of your space, Thinsulate Window Film provides the added benefit of lowering your energy bills. Because your HVAC system doesn’t have to work as strenuously to maintain the temperature set on the thermostat, less energy is required. This improved efficiency also extends the life of your HVAC unit, so you will likely spend less money on HVAC repair and replacement over time.
3M Thinsulate Window Film vs. Window Replacement
Although Thinsulate is on the more costly end of the window film price spectrum, it is significantly less expensive than replacing your existing windows with low-E (low-emissivity) glass. Thinsulate also serves as a cost-effective alternative to replacing single-pane windows with double or triple panes. In fact, upgrading a single-pane window with Thinsulate boosts its insulating abilities to almost that of a double-pane window. Coating a double-pane window with Thinsulate results in energy savings close to that of a triple-pane window.
Many clients worry that the all-season window film will dramatically change the appearance of their home or commercial space. Fortunately, the film will have minimal impact on how your windows look from the interior and exterior of your property.
