How long does window film last?

How long window film lasts depends on the application. Window film can typically last around eighteen to twenty years, but when installed by a 3M Authorized Dealer, the film is also covered by a generous warranty. The warranty length depends on whether it is a residential or commercial application.

3M Warranty for Residential Window Film Applications

When a homeowner invests in 3M window film, the film is covered by 3M’s warranty for as long as they own their home. If someone lives in their home for thirty years, the warranty is in effect for that duration of time. If the house is sold, the warranty does not transfer to the new owners. However, the new owners will likely still benefit from the film’s heat rejection, UV protection, and more, for years to come.

3M Warranty for Commercial Window Film Applications

In commercial settings, 3M window film is covered by the warranty for a finite number of years. Commercial window film warranties range from ten to fifteen years, depending on the type of film installed. Even though the warranty only covers the film for ten to fifteen years, the film will likely benefit the building owner and occupants beyond that timeframe.

How the 3M Warranty Works

The warranty covers both material and labor for:

  • Blistering
  • Bubbling
  • Cracking
  • Crazing
  • Delamination
  • Discoloration / Purpling
  • Peeling
  • Glass Breakage
  • Seal Failure

This means that if there is an issue during the installation, 3M will provide a resolution. It also means that if you had window film installed years ago and you think there is a problem with it, 3M will compensate the installer for visiting your property to evaluate the film. If there is an issue with the film and the warranty period is still in effect, 3M will commission the installer to remove the film and replace it at no cost to you.
