Window film is removable, but the material is not designed to be removed. The application process is what we call a semi-permanent install. The film is applied to window panes using a semi-permanent adhesive, a proprietary 3M product. Once the installation is complete, we ask that you leave the film undisturbed for thirty days. The curing process occurs during these thirty days, so avoid touching or cleaning the film during that time.
How to Remove Window Film
It’s important to work with a certified window film professional to ensure proper installation and removal procedures are followed and optimal outcomes are achieved.
Because the window film is designed to be on the glass for the lifetime of the windows, removing the film takes a lot of elbow grease. We use long razor blades, a little bit of Johnson & Johnson’s baby shampoo with water, and maybe some vinegar. It’s a manual process where we carefully scrape off the film. When done correctly by a professional, the removal process does not damage your windows.
3M Window Film Warranty
If there is an issue with your window film causing you to want it removed, check to see if it is still under warranty. If you want the film removed because it is peeling, bubbling, or cracking and the film is within its warranty period, the film can be removed and replaced at no cost to you. 3M offers a generous warranty for both residential and commercial applications when installed by a 3M Authorized Dealer.
For residential applications, the window film is covered by the warranty for as long as you live in your home. If the film installed 30 years ago starts giving you trouble, 3M will commission an Authorized Dealer like ATD Solar Film & Graphics to remove the film and replace it with new film.
If the film is used in a commercial setting, the warranty lasts between ten and fifteen years. However, the benefits of the film will likely last much longer than the length of the warranty.
